Health Officials Issue "Mosquito Alert" for Bay County

Bay County is now under a mosquito-borne illness advisory.

Several local sentinel chicken flocks, horses and mosquito pools have all tested positive for West Nile, Triple-e and S-L-E virus.

Bay County Health Department says the risk of transmission to human has been increased.

Washington, Holmes and Walton counties have been under an advisory for about a week.

Mosquito Prevention

Health officials say you should follow the five "D's" to protect yourself from these illnesses.

Drain standing water that act as breeding areas for the insects.

Avoid being outdoors at Dusk and Dawn when mosquitoes are seeking blood.

Dress in clothing that covers most of your skin.

Use mosquito repellents that contain at least 30% of the active ingredient "DEET".
