Ga. 'Stand Your Ground' Law Comes Under Fire

ATLANTA (AP) -- A gun rights group wants to defend a federal challenge of Georgia's controversial self-defense law.

The group filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit brought this month by civil rights activist Markel Hutchins that challenges Georgia's so-called stand your ground law. Hutchins says the lawsuit was filed in response to the death of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old killed by a Florida man who said the shooting was in self-defense.

The gun rights group said its members rely on the law daily. It wants a ruling that finds the law constitutional.

Martin's death has ignited racial tensions and stoked debate about so-called stand your ground laws in Florida, Georgia and 19 other states. The laws give people wide latitude to use deadly force rather than retreat during a fight.

Looking at the law it is a good law. Stand your Ground. However it doesn't say run after someone and confront them, shoot them, then claim self defense. You got to be able to understand the law,you don't hunt the person down, it's not a hunting law.If everybody would have a little sense instead of acting like you're a bad *ss---saying I can blow your head off if you're on my property, I can protect whats mine. Sure you can protect whats yours but try to see if the person is a threat before taking action. Don't just kill some body just cause you can.The law in Florida needs to be changed a little. I don't think we should act like we're in the old west,we don't need a hair trigger and a itchy finger. We're better than that. We can Stand Our Ground, but not murder someone because we haven't taken the time to see whether or not the person is even a threat.
