Athletic recruiting on the high school level is off limits in Florida. So is letting kids transfer schools just to play for a different team.

When a high school athlete's family breaks up and moves, even if it's due to divorce or foreclosure, a new school means not being able to play until the following season.

Now legislation has been filed to lift that waiting period.

It would also make students who transferred for other reasons eligible to play.

Many are concerned it would open a floodgate of illegal recruiting.

"When a kid who may have played or has a relationship with or played with a coach through summer league and, you know, all those different types of activities we have during the summer and what have you, it gives those kids that opportunity to say, look, 'I'm not being unfairly recruited'," said Rep. Alan Williams, D-Tallahassee.

Opponents say the ban may be the only way to prevent mid-season recruiting.

A version of Williams' bill passed the House last week. The Senate takes up its version of the bill Wednesday.
