Fla. College Presidents Got Expensive Perks

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida's 28 college presidents are earning millions in salaries and benefits, some of which are in apparent violation of state law.

These are the findings from an inspector general review ordered last year by Gov. Rick Scott. The final report released Monday showed that presidents in the state college system are receiving nearly $10 million in salaries and benefits during the current fiscal year.

The probe discovered that many colleges had contracts that contained severance packages that violate state laws designed to limit payouts.

Eleven colleges also had so-called "rolling" contracts that automatically renewed each year without requiring a vote by college trustees.

Scott ordered the probe last year after trustees at Florida State College at Jacksonville agreed to a $1.2 million severance package with the outgoing president.
