The Florida legislature passed a bill this session to make it easier for developers to build new homes and businesses, but if it's signed into law thousands of Floridians could be in danger of losing their federal flood insurance.

If Governor Rick Scott signs the measure, it would let cities and counties issue building permits without having to get approval from Tallahassee or Washington.

It's supposed to make the building process faster. However, FEMA says if it can't have a say in the permit process, it will revoke federal flood insurance coverage.

The bill's sponsors say Washington would still have the power to attach conditions to new permits, but FEMA is standing firm.

The bill has yet to reach the governor's desk. From there, he'll have 15 days to sign it, veto it or let it become law without his signature.
