MIAMI (AP) -- The former lead compliance officer for Miami Beach has been sentenced to more than four years in prison for extorting money from a local nightclub owner.

Jose L. Alberto also will be on probation for three years and must forfeit $16,600 under Tuesday's sentence. Alberto previously pleaded guilty to an extortion conspiracy charge.

In court documents, Alberto admitted taking a cash payoff in June 2011 in return for not enforcing a code violation at a Miami Beach nightclub. The owner went to the FBI, which had an agent pose as manager of the nightclub.

Authorities say Alberto accepted 22 additional cash payments in return for his protection from code violations and guarantee to keep the nightclub open. Other city code officials have also pleaded guilty in the case.
