Like most parents, Calhoun County School Board member, Kelly King said she tried to keep a close eye on her children's nutrition. So when she learned just one energy drink had the same amount of caffeine as 15 sodas, she told us she became concerned.

"I don't think any parent would knowingly give their child an energy drink, because they wouldn't sit down and give them 15 soft drinks at one time" King said.

Some school district officials said one of the reasons for banning energy drinks was because they didn't want students juiced with caffeine, trying to learn.

"We just felt like it was something for us, from a school system's standpoint, that we should take an approach to help us have a good productive learning environment for our kids" Calhoun County School Superintendent, Ralph Yoder said.

But they also told us it was a matter of health.

"There have been seizures, comas- King explained, " [ESPN] highlighted one individual, he was in a coma. He's OK now, but he was drinking three energy drinks before football practice and it just had a severe impact for him. And there are other cases out there. Especially if you have some sort of undiagnosed heart problem. I just don't think that's a chance we should take with our student body."

Prior to the new policy, Calhoun County School did not sell energy drinks on campus, but student were allowed to drink them on-campus.

Yoder explained, "we can't control what a student does prior to coming to school, and we can't control what a student does after they've left. But, there are some reports out there from a health standpoint for some students who had consumed energy drinks. So we just felt from a health and safety standpoint as well as a conducive learning environment for our students this was a prudent measure we could take."
