Dothan Violent Crimes: Solved

Dothan has seen its share of violent crimes, but what helps police solve those crimes is when businesses install surveillance equipment to capture the suspects.

The sign is posted...24 hour video monitoring at the discount tobacco outlet...but that didn't stop a thief from coming in and robbing the store at knife point late last year.

Two months later, Paul Eaton was robbed at the same store at gunpoint.

"I was here one night, and I was actually about two minutes away from getting out the door, a guy came right in the door behind me, put a gun in my face. I gave him the money and he told me to run to the back," says Paul Eaton.

Although that violent crime has not been solved...the Dothan police department and violent crimes unit studies surveillance video hours at a time frame by frame making sure they comb over each detail in order to land suspects behind bars.

"As you can see the suspect has removed a large knife from his waistband and is threatening the cashier of the business at this time," says Cpl. Chris Barberree.

"The camera system is an extra set of eyes that serves as a silent witness just in case a victim can't remember."

"When I started trying to describe him to the officers, the only thing i could remember was his gun and the mask that he wore, over his face," says Paul Eaton.

And those set of eyes help officers track down the right people.

"The key thing with surveillance video footage is more the public, because they can come forth, because someone somewhere knows where this person is," says Cpl Chris Barberree.

Officers say if cameras are strategically placed around a business or home they can give more angles and a vantage points.

Dothan police also encourage homeowners to install surveillance equipment if their home is ever burglarized.
