Beware of "Jury Duty" Scam

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is warming residents about a group of con artists calling residents, claiming to be with the U.S District Court.

The caller tells the person on the other end of the line that a warrant has been issued for their arrest because they ignored a jury summons. The good news, they can make it all go away if they’ll agree to pay a small fine.

The caller then gives instructions on how to “wire transfer” the payment and then asks for your social security number, date of birth, address and bank account numbers.

The Sheriff’s Office says you should not give out any information. Just hang up and call the Sheriff’s Office Fraud Line at 850-638-8477. If you have questions about whether you actually missed a jury summons in the mail, contact the Washington County Clerk of Courts at 850-638-6285.
