Staying safe is the number one concern when a tornado strikes.
"The debris from a tornado is outrageous"

But what do you do if you're caught in its path?

"Always take cover in an interior room with no windows and try to cover up with blankets to help stop debris," concerned resident Tammy Meadows says.

But what if you're not at home?

"If you're on the road and have no place to go, try to find a public building where there's other people. Go to a fire station...go to a civic's not a recommended shelter, but it's better than nothing," Clark Matthews, Dothan- Houston County EMA Director said.

Those tips are good to remember but may not be the only thing that could save your life....your best ally against a tornado is timing.

When a tornado hits, timing can mean the difference between life and there's a new way for you to stay safe and it fits in the palm of you hand.

And E.M.A officials say your phone is the best place to start.

"Code Red is a rapid notification system to customers out there. They can receive emergency alert notifications through there cell phones," says Dothan- Houston County E.M.A Operations Manager Steve Carlisle.

Signing up for the service is simple.

"They can log on to our website and it's just a matter of clicking on to that Code Red icon."

Once you enter your personal information including name, number and cell phone provider, you're instantly one step ahead of the you and your family piece of mind.
