Under the Affordable Care Act, health insurance companies must spend at least 80 percent of their income from premiums on health care claims.

If they do not meet the requirement, they have to give customers rebates to make up the difference.

Last year, insurance companies nationwide paid half a billion dollars in rebates.

Alabama paid $341,374 in rebates. Nearly 1,500 Alabamians received rebates. The average rebate per family was $248.

Florida paid the second highest amount in rebates in 2012, at $54,380,139. Georgia paid $15,100,161.
