ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- The murder trial of George Zimmerman in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin is Florida's story of the year.
Florida newspaper and broadcast editors picked the trial in which Zimmerman was acquitted of all charges as the state's top story of 2013.
The Zimmerman trial tackled two of the thorniest issues confronting America: race and gun control.
Trailing the Zimmerman trial in the editors' picks was the Florida Legislature's refusal to expand the state's Medicaid program. That story was followed in ranking by the disclosure of records by The Miami New Times linking an anti-aging clinic to the distribution of performance enhancing drugs to major league baseball players.
Rounding out the top 5 stories were Florida's revived efforts to remove non-U.S. citizens from voter rolls, and former Republican Gov. Charlie Crist's announcement to run as a Democrat against incumbent GOP Gov. Rick Scott.
