Holly Segers with the Holmes County Health Department says, "I would not say they are rare, but we do not have a lot of cases in our county."
Residents in the small community of Pine Log Florida located in Holmes County are worried about the spread of rabies. Earlier in the week a dog was bitten by a rabid fox.
A neighbor, who chooses not to be identified, says he saw the fox acting funny.
“Larry:” "It was seen here three days earlier, walking around in this field behind me. It wasn't afraid of nobody. It was just, it would look at you and it had no fear of humans."
Officials say animals displaying odd behaviors, like no fear of humans or aggression, may have rabies. Also, animals most associated with rabies are nocturnal, so if you see them during the day, be careful.
Segars said, "Some that are coming out in the daytime, that aren’t normal like foxes and some other animals like raccoons, if they come out acting very strange or they actually bite your animal, if you have a dog or cat, then of course you’re going to be thinking something is a little bit up with that animal and you might be suspecting rabies."
“Larry:” "No, not out in the open, this is wide open territory. They stay in the woods, the surrounding woods. We got here not normally in the wide open spaces. It just sat there looking at you."
Right now residents are worried about the dangers rabid animals pose to kids in the area.
“Larry:” "We have a lot of mobile homes around here. People move in and out in the summer and winter months and bring kids with them and stuff like that around here."
The test to see if an animal is rabid is done by collecting brain samples. So officials ask if you see an animal that may be in effect, call animal control. If you must kill the animal, don't shoot it in the head. Also, if you are bit, you should seek medical attention right away.
