FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - A southwest Florida county manager has
resigned after sexually explicit e-mails were found on his work
computer following a public records request by the FBI.
Don Stilwell officially resigned on Tuesday, after 16 years as
the county manager for Lee County.
Commissioners had voted last week to terminate Stilwell's employment but offered him a three-month severance package to resign. He had a week with pay to consider the offer.
The e-mails came to light two weeks ago after the FBI requested
correspondence from Stilwell and three other county employees.
Among Stilwell's e-mails were sexually explicit images he had
received and forwarded.
Karen Hawes, Lee County director of human services, has been
named the interim county manager.
