ABOARD THE USS MESA VERDE (AP) - Helicopters hovered aboard a
stealth warship off the East Coast of Florida, while landing craft
launched from its belly patrolled the waters.
It was all part of a 12-nation exercise involving naval forces known as UNITAS Gold. This is the 50th running of the exercises, which is the Navy's longest-running annual exercise.
In addition to the United States and Latin American countries, Mexico is joining the exercises for the first time. Canada and Germany also are involved.
On the horizon from the deck of the USS Mesa Verde, the ships of
other countries can be seen on the horizon.
The main goal of the exercise is to improve the workings of the Navy with other countries.
