Florida prison guards placed on leave for probe of inmate abuse

STARKE, Fla. (AP) - Fifteen guards have been placed on
administrative leave by the Florida Department of Corrections as it
investigates allegations of inmate abuse at Florida State Prison
and Union Correctional Institution.

In the incident at Florida State Prison, 11 officers are accused
of beating inmates during a time period when they mistakenly
believed the prison's surveillance cameras were down as a result of an electrical power breaker exploding.

But DOC spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger says the cameras were
working and recording.

Four officers were also placed on leave at nearby Union
Correctional Institution, but no details are available.
