UF student drowns while studying in Africa

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Searchers have found the body of a University of Florida student who drowned while studying in Africa.

The school says a memorial service is scheduled on campus Monday for 27-year-old Thad Owens, who had been studying wildlife ecology in Namibia.

He disappeared Thursday while attempting to swim across the Kunene River, which borders Namibia and Angola.

The school says Owens transferred to UF from Valencia Community College in Orlando.

UF launched its study-abroad program in Namibia last spring.

Students work on research projects with the Cheetah Conservation Fund and then travel around Namibia to work with various conservation organizations. About eight students are involved in the program this semester.
