EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AP) -- Three Air Force sergeants face
courts-martial for safety violations involving the death of a
Florida-based airman killed while helping dispose of bombs at an
air base in Iraq.
The Pentagon said 25-year-old Senior Airman James A. Hansen of
Athens, Michigan, died Sept. 15, 2010, during a "controlled
demolition" at Joint Base Balad. Hansen was from the 46th
Operations Support Section at Elgin Air Force Base in the Florida
Panhandle.
The Pensacola News-Journal (http://on.pnj.com/uFK6tp ) reported
Thursday that Hansen's parents will speak on their son's behalf at
each sergeant's court-martial to be held at their home station over
the next few months.
Charges against the three sergeants, who supervised the botched
demolition, were filed in June. An accident report listed several
safety issues.
