Bay County commissioners approved bed tax increase

The Tourist Development Council members have something to celebrate. The long-debated increase in the to five cents bed tax passed at around 11:20 Tuesday afternoon.

Bay County Commissioners approved a fifth cent in bed tax from guests staying in Panama City Beach.

The vote passed 4-1; Jerry Girvin was the deciding factor. The resolution allows the tax to be collected for 5-years.

TDC members say they're going to use the money to market to low-cost air carriers for the new airport. And they say bringing in those cheaper airlines will benefit both visitors and residents.

The tax goes into effect March 1st.
