Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division of the Bay County Sheriff’s Office arrested David William Armstrong Tuesday,on charges of Identity Theft.

Employees of Advance American in Callaway contacted the Bay County Sheriff’s Office after Armstrong attempted to cash a check with a false social security number. Employees stated that Armstrong has originally come in to the business, filled out an application, and tried to cash a personal check he had written with an incorrect date.

Armstrong had tried to correct the date but the business refused to cash it because of the error. Armstrong said he had no more personal checks and then went to a nearby bank, opened a new account, and obtained temporary checks. Armstrong returned to Advance American and tried to cash a temporary check.

Employees noticed the social security number on the temporary check was different from the one Armstrong had put on the application and called the BCSO.

An investigation was opened and Armstrong, DOB 12/20/69, of Niceville, was arrested and charged with Identity Theft. It is now believed that Armstrong may have committed similar acts in Crestview, Fort Walton, and Navarre.

The investigation continues and additional charges are expected.
