DeFuniak Springs, FL – Sheriff Michael Adkinson, upon taking office, has tasked his staff with reviewing outstanding and pending cases.

One case in particular dealt with the disappearance of an Alzheimer patient missing since last July.

A cooperative effort was mounted this past Saturday, January 24th in an effort to bring closure to the case.

Sergeant Cheri Rivers, Investigator Donna Armstrong and Anna LaCour Crime Prevention Coordinator formulated a plan and went out to get the resources needed to facilitate the search.

The following assisted the WCSO in the endeavor: Southwest Panhandle Search and Rescue K-9 / Emotional First Aid Team from Cantonment, FL and Foley, AL. Also assisting was Klaas Kids SAR, Escambia SAR, Southeast K-9 SAR and Gulf County Sheriff’s Office.

Human Remains Detection K-9’s specially trained to detect only human remains were used.

A short time after the search began; human remains were discovered in a heavy wooded and swampy area, approximately 100 yards south of where he came up missing from.

Although positive identification is pending, it is believed to be the man missing since last July.

The remains were sent to the Medical Examiner’s office for further examination.

By working together with other agencies and through the hard work of Sheriff Adkinson’s staff, results happen.

Sheriff Adkinson gives a special thanks to all that assisted his agency in this endeavor.
