FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a Cape Coral man wanted on a warrant for multiple felony charges turned himself in after attempting to fake his own death to avoid jail time.
Fort Myers police say 22-year-old Christopher Rehbein turned himself in to his bail bondsmen Tuesday morning. His girlfriend had called police earlier in the morning to report that he had jumped off a bridge. Several law enforcement agencies began to search for Rehbein.
Police later discovered the story was a hoax set up by Rehbein because he was afraid to go to jail.
The couple was planning to run off to Tennessee.
Rehbein was being held without bail.
His girlfriend, 20-year-old Sarah Adkins, was charged with filing a false report. She was being held on $1,000 bail.
