1 killed in small plane crash off SW Florida

GOODLAND, Fla. (AP) - Authorities have identified the pilot who died in a small plane to crash in shallow waters off the coast of southwest Florida.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the single-engine Cessna 172 crashed Wednesday night 10 miles off
the coast of Marco Island, in Collier County.

Benjamin Arthur Simpson, 74, of Naples, who was the only person on board, was killed.

Neither the plane's origin nor its destination were immediately known. Bergen says the pilot had not filed a flight plan.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating.
