FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A report shows that Florida leads
the nation in the number of public school teachers gaining national
certification.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards said Tuesday that 1,826 teachers in the state were certified in 2008.

Ranked second was North Carolina with 1,453 teachers.

But Broward County outranks Miami-Dade County - the state's
largest school district - in the number of teachers who have earned
National Board Certification. Broward had 1,653; Miami-Dade had
1,350. Broward also had more teachers certified in 2008 with 358
while Miami-Dade had 221.

The voluntary certification process takes one to three years to complete.

In Florida, certified teachers receive an annual bonus for 10 years.
