On Sunday, October 12, 2008, at approximately 7:12 p.m., Officer Michael Howell of the Florida Department of Transportation”s (FDOT) Office of Motor Carrier Compliance (MCCO), conducted a traffic stop on a commercial motor vehicle, operated by Eduardo Transport Corporation on Interstate 10 eastbound at exit 85 in Walton County for the purpose of conducting a commercial vehicle inspection.
Due to the suspicion of criminal activity, Officer Howell requested assistance from FDOT Officer Tim Collins, Officers John Pettis and Bobby Gardner from DeFuniak Springs Police Department, and the Florida Highway Patrol.
Officer Howell deployed Canine Max to conduct a sniff of the vehicle. Canine Max alerted on the truck and trailer. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed one hundred and fifty kilos (330 pounds) of cocaine with a street value of approximately $3,000,000 and $3,000 in U.S. currency.
Driver Eduardo Requejo of Miami and co-driver Jorge Luis Almanza of Texas were arrested on trafficking charges and turned over to Special Agents of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The truck tractor and trailer were seized. This investigation is ongoing.
