APALACHICOLA, Fla. (AP) - A correctional officer and seven inmates
have all been released from hospitals after a prison van crashed on a
Florida Panhandle bridge.
The van was pulling a trailer loaded with gym weights across the
U.S. 98 bridge over Apalachicola Bay when it turned over on its
left side Monday.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers said the weight of the trailer caused it
to bounce and weave, resulting in the accident.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger said the
inmates were helping move items from one school to another, and the
officer, who was driving the van, and the inmates were released from
hospitals in Apalachicola and Tallahassee Monday night.
