TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Gov. Charlie Crist says Florida is speeding up $1.4 billion in road construction projects to stimulate the state's sagging economy.
It's all part of a bigger initiative the governor asked for in August. He calls it Accelerate Florida.
At the time Crist urged agencies to speed up spending on nearly $30 billion in projects already on the drawing boards to help the economy.
He visited Department of Transportation headquarters Wednesday to announce that the agency has advanced 179 projects employing 39,000 people by one to five months.
Transportation Secretary Stephanie Kopelousos said her department did it by cutting red tape. In some cases, employees have worked longer hours.
