Jacksonville Police Officer Dies in Car Accident

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - A Jacksonville police officer has died in a traffic accident after hitting a parked truck in a construction zone.

Sheriff John Rutherford says Officer Christopher Kane died about 3 a.m. Thursday when his vehicle struck a parked semitrailer truck in a construction zone closed to traffic. Rutherford says Kane had finished his shift and had stopped to chat with some off-duty officers.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Bill Leeper says the truck was parked nearby and Kane may not have seen it as he pulled out. Kane died at
the scene.

The 38-year-old is survived by a wife and two children.
