ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - St. Petersburg police say a DNA match led them to arrest a serial rapist.
Officers arrested 45-year-old Terrell Gerald Hughes at his home in St. Petersburg on Wednesday night.
He's been linked to two of the rapes through a DNA sample taken from him for the state database when he was convicted in February of dealing in stolen property.
Those rapes occurred in 1999 and 2001. Authorities believe three other rapes of prostitutes in that time frame are related. In all the of the cases, the women were picked up, raped, beaten and then dropped off.
The suspect description in all the cases matched that of Hughes.
It wasn't clear if Hughes had an attorney yet.
