PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- Authorities have released or moved roughly a quarter of the inmates at a Florida Panhandle jail after weekend flooding knocked out its power and air conditioning.

Nearly 700 inmates were being held at the Escambia County jail Sunday when floodwaters from torrential rains cut its systems.

The kitchen and laundry facilities still are out, and a backup air-conditioning system is being used.

The sheriff's office tells the Pensacola News Journal that 50 inmates entered guilty or no-contest pleas in their cases and were sentenced to time served.

Fifteen federal inmates were sent to the Santa Rosa County jail, and 48 other inmates were sent to state prison.

Prosecutors dropped charges against six inmates.

Thirty-five inmates bonded out of jail, and 18 others were transferred to other agencies.
