Zimmerman Stepping Up Fundraising Efforts for Trial Costs

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- Former neighborhood watch leader George Zimmerman plans to step up fund-raising efforts to pay for expenses while he awaits trial for fatally shooting Trayvon Martin.

Zimmerman's attorney said Wednesday that Zimmerman plans to launch a new defense fund next month with a new fund manager.

Donors to the New George Zimmerman Defense Fund will receive "thank you" cards individually signed by Zimmerman.

Zimmerman's attorney, Mark O'Mara, said an existing fund has raised $140,000 since it was launched last May, but funds currently are at the lowest they have ever been.

Zimmerman has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and claims the shooting was self-defense under the state's "stand your ground" law.

A trial is set for June, but a "stand your ground hearing" could be held by April.
