GOODWATER, Ala. (AP) - Some witnesses are disputing the police
account of the shooting of a man in a courtroom today in Alabama.
Police say an officer shot and wounded the man -- who was in court on a harassment charge -- after he attacked a judge and tried to grab a gun from a spectator.
But people who were in the courtroom say they didn't see the man hit or threaten the judge or try to grab a weapon.
A woman who knows the man and was sitting in the front row says
he got agitated after the judge fined him $800. She says the man, who had a cast on his leg, waved one of his crutches in the air.
Sara Williams says police were "hollering for him to get down" when an officer opened fire.
After the shooting, she and more than a dozen other people stood
across the street from City Hall, chanting, "We want justice."
The wounded man is being treated at a hospital. There's no word on his condition.
