US Has Biggest Prison Population in World; Alabama 4th in US


The United States has the largest prison population in the world.

According to the International Center for Prison Studies, there are 2.24 million people in U.S. prisons. The U.S. also has the most female prisoners of the world.

The odds of being imprisoned in the U.S. are four times higher than in Turkey or Venezuela.

Americans are six times more likely to end up in prison than people living in Canada and seven times more likely than people in France or Italy.

Alabama has the fourth highest imprisonment rate for adults in the country. Louisiana, Mississippi and Oklahoma top the list.
