BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Police say they've taken a suspect into custody after a suspected arson fire at a Birmingham apartment building that displaced dozens of people on Christmas Eve.
Birmingham police say charges are pending against the 19-year-old Fairfield man, who was being held in the Jefferson County Jail.
Police said in a statement that the suspect was involved in a case of domestic violence with someone involved in the fire at the Uptown Apartments days before the blaze. Authorities said previously that a possible suspect was identified near the apartments watching the blaze as firefighters tried to put it out.
American Red Cross spokesman Chris Osborne said up to 40 people may have been displaced from the apartment complex, and a temporary shelter was set up to help them.
