HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP) -- Relatives of a teenager who died in a shooting at a north Alabama middle school say they accept the apology of the youth who pleaded guilty in the slaying.

Melinda Allen says the words of remorse from 17-year-old Hammad Memon helped her "a lot."

Allen is an aunt of 14-year-old Todd Brown, who was shot to death at Discovery Middle School in Madison in February 2010.

Memon pleaded guilty Tuesday in the shooting, and a judge sentenced him to 30 years in prison.

Another aunt of Brown, Tangela Eaptiste, tells WAAY-TV that Memon's apology seemed heartfelt. She says she has no choice but to accept it. See the full report here; http://bit.ly/117pxp9.

Memon's parents await trial on charges of trying to help him escape following his arrest. They are charged with hindering prosecution.
