Officer David Wagoner pulled over a vehicle early Saturday.

He asked the driver, a 17-year-old female, for her driver's license and then asked a male passenger for his identification.

Police say the passenger replied that he didn't have his ID.

The officer proceeded to walk to the passenger's side of the car.

That's when police say Yousel Lopez Rivera shot the officer three times.

Two of the shots struck the officer's bulletproof vest.

A third hit him below in the abdomen below the vest.

Investigators say Wagoner returned fire but neither the suspect nor the passenger were hit.

Rivera was later found and charged with attempted first-degree murder of a police officer.
