Mexico's presidential front-runner says he's against legalizing drugs as a method to fight trafficking in a country plagued by violence.
Enrique Pena Nieto calls it a "simplistic" approach and says allowing the use of so-called soft drugs leads to harder, more damaging substances.
The candidate for the Institutional Revolutionary Party says in a Monday interview with The Associated Press that he is open to a debate on the idea, but he is not convinced.
He says he plans to fight violence rather than the cartels themselves, though he doesn't specify what he would change.
Pena Nieto's party is seeking to regain the presidency it lost in 2000 after 71 years in power. He has a strong lead in opinion polls, standing double digits ahead of Mexico's ruling and leftist parties.
