Man Slain in Birmingham's 7th Killing in Past Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) -- Police say a gunman opened fire from a car, killing a man outside his Birmingham apartment in the city's 7th killing in less than a week.

Birmingham police say the man was standing outside his apartment complex and talking with a friend when a dark-colored SUV drove by and someone started firing a gun from the vehicle.

Police Lt. Sean Edwards tells WBRC-TV ( that several shots were fired, and the man was struck in the chest. He died at a hospital early Thursday morning.

Others killed in the past week include two men shot in a gun battle outside the Showstoppers Motorcycle Club; a 71-year-old woman stabbed in a break-in at her home; and a man shot during a robbery attempt as he walked through a park with his wife.
