MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A federal court jury is deliberating in the trial of a former prison supervisor charged with fatally beating an inmate and trying to cover up what happened.
The jury of eight women and four men began deliberations Tuesday morning after listening to six days of testimony in the trial of 38-year-old Michael Smith.
The state Department of Corrections fired Smith after Ventress Correctional Facility inmate Rocrast Mack was fatally beaten in August 2010. Smith was the prison supervisor when it happened.
Smith is charged with violating Mack's constitutional rights, obstruction of justice and conspiracy. Two other former prison employees have pleaded guilty and another is awaiting trial.
