India: Hospital And Workers Attacked After Infant Death

An irate mob ransacked the Sadar Hospital at Suri in Bardhaman district of India's eastern state of West Bengal on Sunday (April 28).

They damaged extensive property and even injured the hospital as a mark of protest against the death of one of the twin infants delivered here.

The agitating crowd alleged that the doctors had left the infant unattended, leading to the baby's death.

Earlier a woman with labor pains was admitted at the Suri Sadar Hospital and she delivered twins. Unfortunately, one of the baby twins died immediately after birth.

After the mother and the child were safely sent home, the family of the baby claimed that it was due to hospital negligence that the infant died and aided by a mob, they resorted to violence.

Speaking to the media people, Assistant Medical Superintendent of the Suri Sadar Hospital, Dr. Sushanta Malakar complained that he was manhandled by the mob.

"They manhandled me, ransacked the hospital property and severely injured a hospital nurse who is now admitted for treatment," said Dr. Malakar.

The mob went door to door and smashed the chairs, computers, hospital machinery.

They not only destroyed the property, but also physically abused some of the hospital staff, leading to severe injuries to one of the nurses.

Further Dr.Malakar said that he had informed the District Magistrate seeking immediate protection.

"I immediately informed and sent a letter to the District Magistrate demanding police protection for myself, hospital staff and the nurses. And I demand for protection at once," added Dr. Sushanta Makar.

The attacked nurse, Anjali Das claimed that the mob slapped everybody they came across, but she couldn't recognize the people as they had their faces covered with cloth.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities condemned the violence and shed off any responsibility for the child's death.
