BLAKELY, Ga. (AP) -- U.S. Attorney's officials say a county sheriff's investigator in southwest Georgia has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to extortion.

Prosecutors say 35-year-old Jarrod Murkerson, of Blakely, was sentenced Thursday. Officials say Murkerson was an Early County Sheriff's Office investigator and provided information and protection to a person he thought was a drug dealer.

The purported drug dealer was actually a confidential informant.

Officials say Murkerson was paid $1,000 in exchange for the information and protection he provided to the informant as he transported nine ounces of cocaine through Early County. Murkerson also admitted to selling the informant steroids for $1,200.

Murkerson has also been ordered to serve two years of supervised release after his prison sentence.

Blakely is about 50 miles west of Albany.
