Former Washington man told to pay $25K in cat's death

An arbitrator has ordered a former Lacey, Washington man to pay his ex-wife $25,000 in the death of her cat.

Justin Chlarson was accused of kicking the cat in May 2010, when the couple were still married. He later pleaded guilty to a gross misdemeanor charge of second-degree animal cruelty, receiving a suspended 90-day jail sentence and $1,000 fine.

The man's lawyer, Christopher Taylor, tells The Olympian that his client has moved to California and won't appeal the arbitrator's decision.

Thurston County Arbitrator Harold Carr's recent decision broke down plaintiff Kendra Vorhies Flores' damages into $15,000 for the cat and $10,000 for her emotional suffering.

The 23-year-old Lacey woman says she'd had the long-haired calico cat since she was 11.
