TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- A Florida Panhandle sheriff charged with official misconduct has been removed from his job.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement announced the charge Tuesday against Liberty County Sheriff Nick Finch.

Liberty County is about 40 miles west of Tallahassee.

State authorities allege that Finch released a resident who had been arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and that he then either removed or destroyed the records associated with the arrest.

An FDLE spokeswoman said Finch was booked into the Liberty County jail and then released on his own recognizance.

Finch was elected sheriff in November 2012.

Gov. Rick Scott has appointed Carl Causey as interim sheriff. Causey, an FDLE special agent, previously worked for the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.
