The 2-year-old boy is recovering after initially being in critical condition.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office says his parents found him gasping for air and fading in and out of consciousness Saturday afternoon.

Authorities say the parents, 34-year-old Kurt Vineis and 31-year-old Katrina Palmer, initially denied having prescription medication in the house but then confessed to having a stash of pills in the trunk of their car.

The drugs included a sedative, diazepam; an anti-anxiety drug, alprazolam; a muscle relaxant, carisoprodol; and a painkiller, oxycodone.

Deputies are investigating why the couple had so many pills.

The Florida Department of Children and Families is taking custody of the boy.
