MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) -- A trial begins Wednesday in Montgomery for a fired Alabama prison supervisor accused of severely beating an inmate and then covering it up after the inmate died.

Former Lt. Michael Smith is one of four people charged in the 2010 death of inmate Rocrast Mack. Two former employees at Ventress Correctional Facility in Clayton have already pleaded guilty. One other is scheduled for trial next month.

The two who pleaded guilty said Mack was beaten and stomped by prison employees.

Smith's attorney has filed court papers saying he was responding to a prison officer being injured by an inmate and trying to keep violence from erupting in the prison in southeast Alabama.

Mack's family sued the state Department of Corrections and got a $900,000 settlement.
