Bay County Sheriff Frank McKeithen announced today the arrest of Tony Lynn Barnes on Aggravated Battery charges in the shooting of his son.
At about 10:38 a.m. this morning the Bay County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in reference to a shooting. Deputies arrived at 6004 Muscogee Avenue in Bayou George to find the victim, Kyle Barnes, suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. EMS took Kyle Barnes to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition with non-life threatening wounds.
The suspect, Barnes’s father, Tony Barnes, fled the scene before deputies arrived. Sheriff Frank McKeithen obtained Tony Barnes’ cell phone number from a Barnes family member and spoke with the suspect. Sheriff McKeithen was able to convince Tony Barnes to meet him at the corner of Edwards Road and Highway 77. Barnes did meet with the Sheriff and was taken into custody without incident.
Further investigation has established that the shooting took place at 6829 Southwood Street, the home of the victim. Barnes and his son were involved in an argument prior to the shooting. During the argument, Tony Barnes armed himself with a .38 caliber handgun. While involved in the altercation, Tony Barnes discharged the handgun, striking his son in the lower abdomen, and fled the scene. The victim, Kyle Barnes, managed to get himself a few blocks away to a friend’s home at 6004 Muscogee Avenue, before a 911 call was placed.
Tony Barnes, DOB 8/20/63, of Whaler Morris Road in Southport, has been charged with Aggravated Battery with a Firearm—Domestic Violence, and taken to the Bay County Jail.
