FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) -- A southwest Florida man has been charged
with shining a laser light at a sheriff's office helicopter.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office reports that 29-year-old Michael Wayne Smith was arrested and charged Tuesday.

Deputies were flying about 600 feet above Fort Myers when they noticed a green laser hit the cockpit. One deputy reported that the
light hit him in the eye and temporarily impaired his vision.

The sheriff's office reports that the deputies were about to locate the source of the laser and saw two people run into a nearby home. The deputies put a spotlight on the home until deputies on the ground could respond.

Smith was being held without bail set. Jail records didn't say if he had an attorney.
