Dothan House Fire Confirmed as Arson

Fingerprints are blurred by soot. Suspects are gone before the blaze. It’s arson, and sometimes, it's hard to prove.

“What we do is an origin and cause investigation on any fire that we have,” said Captain Mike Shiver, Assistant Fire Marshal with the Dothan Fire Department.

Pinpointing an origin is even harder, but arson happens all too often.

On August 12th, a house on East Newton Street went up in flames. It happened around 6:30 in the morning. Now, investigators gathered enough evidence to determine it was no accident.

"We did have a second floor and a roof collapse on the structure. Today [Thursday], what we did was, lay down an exterior wall and pull some of the debris to the outside so we could look at and photograph it,” said Shiver.

Even though there are slim details, the fire department is not investigating alone. They have acquired a team fit for prosecution.

“On this particular fire, we have an arson task force here in Dothan, which combines the efforts of Dothan Fire Marshal's Office, Dothan Police Department's investigators, Crime Team Investigators, and then we have other resources to call in,” said Shiver.

No one was inside during the fire and no one was injured. Investigators said there was something suspicious about the fire and that helped determine it was arson. Police urge anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 334-793-7000. Witnesses could be eligible for a $1,000 reward.
