Covington County -- At approximately 2:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, an Alabama State Trooper attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle that was speeding on U.S. 331 near the city limits of Brantley. The trooper pursued the vehicle into Covington County where Opp Police successfully deployed spike strips. Opp Police were able to bring the vehicle to a halt. It was determined that an Opp officer fired upon the vehicle's tire, striking the driver in the process. The driver of the vehicle, Courtney Keon Jones, 32, of Birmingham, was transported to Baptist South Medical Center in Montgomery for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Jones has been charged with first-degree possession of stolen property (stolen vehicle) and attempting to elude.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation (ABI), the investigative division of the Alabama Department of Public Safety, will conduct an investigation into the officer-involved shooting at the request of the Opp Police chief. The ABI's findings will be turned over to the Covington County District Attorney for review.
