(Dothan, AL)--The Dothan Police Department is working hard to find the people involved in 3-gas station hold ups. Until the suspects are caught, many customers across the pumps say they're taking extra precautions before filling up.
“I feel insecure that when I go in the store,” Customer Marshall Drinkard said. “ I usually have my grandchildren with me, what happens if somebody robs the store, gets a little nervous and ends up killing someone?” he said.
Being caught in the middle of an armed robbery is one of Drinkard’s biggest fears.
“We just live in a world that those kinds of things happen where you have to be thinking about it,” Stacy Fountain said. “You have to protect yourself, protect your family as best you can,” she said.
The Hobo Pantry Store, a Citgo, and a Kangaroo gas station have been robbed in Dothan over the past few weeks. All the crimes happened around ten p.m., which can be a very busy time for many gas stations.
“Most of our gas stations are very well lit in the front areas but often times the lighting behind the business is not as good, which will allow someone to come from the rear of the business,” Dothan Police Department Sergeant Rachel David Said.
Marshal, like many people, are already well aware of these risks.
“I try to avoid night time because that's when they try to do stuff like that,” Marshall said.
Pumping and paying for gas during the day is always the safest bet.
“I always pay at the pump and stay in a well light area,” Fountain said. “When you hear about robberies happening I pay extra attention,” she said.
Marshall always has a warning for those who thinking about committing a dangerous crime.
“Anyone thinking about robbing any store should think about how much time they’ll have to reflect when they go to jail, and if they die, they won’t have anytime,” Marshall said.
Although all three robberies have had a similar suspect, police say each robbery could be a different person.
